REPORT #1215 "Below the Border" Saltwater Fly-Fishing reports since 1996
East Cape
“We went down to 15 pound fluorocarbon and #6 hooks to finally get a bite,” he said. “The larger fish would break us off on the barnacles that were growing on the bottoms of the docks!”
Mark Rayor reported good fishing if you were prepared to go for it. Ben Secrest, of Accurate Reels, apparently was. First he ran up to Punta Perico to find some sardina. While there, they limited out on pargo and cabrilla, since the bite outside had been slow. Then heading south close to shore, they landed five good-sized roosters in an hour.
Rayor reported that he found snook under the docks of the San Jose del Cabo Marina. There were some quality-sized fish but they were very line shy. “We went down to 15 pound fluorocarbon and #6 hooks to finally get a bite,” he said. “The larger fish would break us off on the barnacles that were growing on the bottoms of the docks!”
Meanwhile, later in the week, the first boats to find the schools of porpoise, also found larger yellowfin, but as more boats arrived, the bite would shut off and it was ‘run and gun’ some more. While there seems to be a good number of marlin in the area, they are not biting very well. Few, if any, schools of dorado are being found.

There were few boats fishing this week either offshore or inside the Esteros. According to Bob Hoyt, plans are underway for a Snook Tournament in late July. Lance Peterson and I will be attending a meeting along with Bob and Government officials in Ciudad Constitución this week to firm up the details.

The blue water is steadily making its way back closer to shore, with it currently being about 12 miles off the beach. The action is still slow for sailfish, with a per-boat average of only one a day. A few blue marlin are also being caught.
There are very few people fishing…only about 8 to 10 boats a day are leaving the municipal pier.
Light tackle and fly rod action has been excellent inshore on the hard fishing black skip jack tuna (barilettes) and chulas. Eighty-eight year old Commander, Ellis Skidmore (USN-retired) of Madras OR and Eric Skidmore of Bend OR, fished with Cheva and me on the panga, Dos Hermanos II. We would pull up on a school of the breaking skipjacks, with Eric on the bow with the fly rod, and Cheva casting a one-ounce crippled herring. Cheva would be bit instantly, and passed the rod off to Ellis. Eric was way behind his Dad's count of 30 caught and 22 brought to the boat, but both had a great time.…Ed Kunze

Cabo hosted the IGFA Offshore World Championship with 40 teams from around the world competing. In four days of fishing there were only 60 striped marlin caught and released. A local team won with seven releases…their second IGFA World Championship win in a row. Congrats to the team: Oscar Daccarett, Javier Villavicancio, Jobe Villavicancio, Rafael Garcia, Hernando Gonzales (who released six) and Daniel Fisher (who released one).
Football-sized tuna are close in, along with the wahoo. Bigger fish were around Golden Gate, but the rougher water made it difficult to reach them.
There were a few dorado caught mostly from people heading out to deeper waters looking for the bigger tuna and marlin. Most were in the 15 to 25 pound range. No dorado were landed during the tournament!!!
All I can say is WOW!!! The catch of the week: Lots of wahoo, mostly in the 30 to 60 pound range. And the best part is, you don't have to go far. They are right out front. Had some guys go out just for the afternoon and they got five hookups with three in the boat. Smallest was about 30 pounds and the other two were 45 to 50 pounds each. Right place right time! You need to hop a plane and get here now! Bigger fish were caught with concentrations of tuna.
Inshore action produced roosterfish and sierra where the wahoo have been......…George and Mary Landrum
