IT'S TOURNAMENT TIME!
It’s October in Baja and that can only mean one thing: IT'S TOURNAMENT TIME! Beginning Saturday with the Van Wormer’s Tuna Shootout, one tournament follows another all the way into November.
I had a great trip down on the C Bandit, finding fish and fun everywhere we went. I’ll update you on that trip in my next Baja Bytes feature.
For now, I will be at all of the tournaments and will post updates and final winners. So, stay tuned -- this ought to be fun.

Tuna pens lead the way as bite intensifies down Baja Coast
Last week a group hosted by Michael Schweit, President of Federation of Fly Fishers, Southwest Council fished aboard the Fortune with Captain Bruce A. Smith along with some anglers fishing both fly and conventional tackle. I was invited to tag along on this "below the border" trip. The first day we finished up with a bluefin sundowner that was epic. During the night we headed back up the line to the tuna pens. More

Pemex and Plastic
Credit cards at Pemex stations? Go figure. Frankly, I never bothered to ask before. The following thread seems to confirm that many stations do offer that service. I would be interested in any comments regarding your experiences with plastic and Pemex.

Stripers show, wind blows, Spring approaching
One time I sat in a spot where I knew there were fish but they would not go and I jumped in the water to see that there were fish every were. But I had to wait for a tide change. Then the light switch goes on for an hour or so … and that's it!

Yellowfin Tuna World Record Presentation at Long Beach Fred Hall Show
After standing for 33 years, the All-Tackle World Record for yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) was first shattered by Mike Livingston on November 30, 2010 with a 405-pound (183.7 kg.) catch, and then again by Guy Yocom on September 18, 2012 with his even larger 427 pounder (193.68 kg.). Both fish were landed off the coast of Baja.
IGFA Trustee Mike Farrior and IGFA President Rob Kramer will present the latest yellowfin tuna All-Tackle World Record certificate to Yocom and his Captain, Greg DiStefano, at the upcoming Fred Hall Show in Long Beach, California. The presentation will take place on the Ultimate Saltwater Experience Theater Stage at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 7.

Panama lights up while north wind dominates in Sea of Cortez
Not sure what happened but we lost the biggest mullet snapper I have ever seen hooked on a fly…so we resorted to conventional.

Humboldt squid to the north and Cabo striper's at the tip + IGFA Q&A
The aftermath of a crazy wide-open sierra bite on the Pacific Coast of Baja Sur…scales on my hands and a fly reduced to threads by sierra teeth. Even with only the epoxy head remaining, it was devoured on almost every cast. Let the fish smoking commence...Lance Peterson
